(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball team hits the road for a crucial series against #11 Brewton-Parker College. The Pack sit two games out of the eighth spot in the SSAC with six games remaining. The series will kick off in Mount Vernon, Georgia on Friday, April 18th with a doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m. The series finale will be on Saturday, April 19th at 12 p.m.
Brewton-Parker (27-9, 16-7) currently sits in second in the conference standings, 1.5 games behind Faulkner for the regular season crown. Loyola (25-21, 11-13) is tied for 10th with Auburn-Montgomery. Mobile and William Carey are tied for the last two spots that qualify for the conference tournament at 13-11. Bethel is 12-12 with two conference weekends remaining.
Kevin Lindsey (5-6), Daniel Posway (5-4), and Joel Buhler (4-6) head to the mound for the Wolf Pack. Lindsey has a 1.84 ERA on the season in 11 starts. He has worked six complete games while throwing 68.1 innings on the season. He has issued only eight walks and ranks 13th in the NAIA in walks allowed per nine innings with 1.05. Posway is tied with Lindsey for the team lead in innings with 68.1. He has a 2.37 ERA in 11 games. Posway has 26 strikeouts against 13 walks on the year. Buhler leads the team with 59 strikeouts on the season. The lefthander has a 3.43 ERA in 65.2 innings.
Loyola is led offensively by Karson Cullins. Cullins has a .326 average and 27 RBI’s during the 2014 campaign. Brandon Snow paces the squad with 34 runs and 13 steals. Jack Nicholson has 18 RBI’s and is tied with Snow for the team lead with eight doubles. Cazayoux has a .324 average and a .426 on base percentage from the leadoff spot in the order.
Kory Booker (6-2), Evin Einhardt (5-1), and Mike Venturelli (5-1) are set to take the mound for Brewton-Parker. Booker has a 3.70 ERA in 41.1 innings this season. He has 34 strikeouts in nine starts and 11 appearances. Einhardt has a 0.80 ERA and a team best 49 strikeouts in 56 innings this year. He ranks third in the NAIA in ERA and total earned runs allowed. Venturelli has posted a 1.77 ERA to date with 66 innings. He has struck out 47 and walked 16.
Brewton Parker’s offense is fronted by Eddie Peyton’s .389 average and 31 runs. Mike Parker has 28 RBI’s and is tied for the team lead with Brett Steadman. Parker and Peyton both have swatted a team best four home runs this season. Chris Van Brandt has 20 steals to lead the Barons while also sporting a .356 average.
Loyola is on a five game winning streak, tie for the longest of the season. The most recent victory was an exciting midweek game which saw them beat Southern University 8-7. Carmelo LoSauro had three RBI’s including a walk off single down the right field line which plated Snow. Loyola took the lead in the seventh as five runs crossed the plate. However, Jaguars tied the game in the eighth and the ninth innings. Snow and Cullins combined for four hits, four runs, and three RBI’s in the Wolf Pack win.
Brewton Parker’s midweek doubleheader against USC Beaufort was cancelled. In their last series against Mobile, the Barons completed a three game sweep. A Friday doubleheader saw Brewton Parker win a pair of 4-0 games. Saturday’s contest saw the Barons prevail 20-19 as they took a 10-0 lead in the first three innings. However, Mobile came back with at least one run in the last six innings. BPC held on thanks to five run innings in the sixth and eighth frames.
This will be the first ever matchup between Loyola and Brewton-Parker as they did not play each other in SSAC play last season.
