Loyola falls in both halves of Saturday doubleheader

Jack Nicholson recorded three hits, but the Pack fell in Saturday's doubleheader

(Jackson, Miss.) Loyola University New Orleans lost 5-0 and 8-2 in a doubleheader against Belhaven University on Saturday afternoon at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, Mississippi.

Game 1: Loyola 0 Belhaven 5

Belhaven scored one run in the first inning and pushed four across in the third inning en route to a 5-0 win in game one of the doubleheader against Loyola.

Rayko Bellmas (4-1) pitched seven innings and only giving up three hits. He struck out four batters in the complete game victory.

Kevin Lindsey (4-4) took the loss as he pitched six innings and gave up five hits, five runs, and one walk. Only two runs were earned as the Pack committed two errors. Lindsey recorded two strikeouts.

Philip Cazayoux had a single and Jack Nicholson roped a double for his only hit of the game. Brandon Snow launched a triple as part of his 1 for 3 day.

Reagan Rutledge and Emilio DeSilva each recorded one hit and crossed the plate once. Paul Pickerrell was 1 for 2 with two runs. Tyler Akins had two RBI’s as he went 1 for 3. Dominick Francia was 1 for 3 with one run and one RBI.

Game 2: Loyola 2 Belhaven 8

Loyola (16-16, 6-9) fell 8-2 in the second game of the doubleheader as Belhaven scored one run apiece in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd innings. Loyola scored two in the fourth inning to make it a one run game as Nevin Brown reached on a single. Nicholson followed with a hit to put runners on the corners. Peyton Senner had an RBI groundout to score Brown. Daniel Pappas brought home Nicholson with a RBI single.

The game remained a one run affair until Belhaven (26-7, 10-5) scored four runs in the seventh inning and added one more in the eighth on their way to sweeping the three game series with Loyola.

Chris Good (4-1) earned the victory as he pitched five innings and gave up five hits and two runs. Ben Allison, Andrew Gunn, Josh Rogers, and Austin McCann each pitched an inning of shutout relief.

Joel Buhler (2-5) took the loss despite pitching 6.2 innings. He allowed 10 hits, seven runs, four earned , and three walks. The sophomore struck out four before Caleb Bohan relieved him. Bohan pitched .2 innings and gave up three hits, one walk, and one run. Connor Thurman recorded the last two outs for Loyola.

Nicholson and Garrett Lacour each recorded two hits for the Pack. Brown and Nicholson scored runs whole Senner and Pappas knocked in runs.

Pickerrell went 2 for 4 with two runs and one RBI. Akins had a 2 for 2 game while tallying two RBI’s and scoring once. Gabe Wilson and James Peterson both had two hits while Wilson knocked in one run and Peterson scored once. Michael Wurster, Hunter Sutton and DeSilva each added a run. Tee Payne and Josiah Richard had the other Blazer RBI’s.

The Wolf Pack will return to action on Tuesday, March 25th as they make a second consecutive trip to Jackson, Mississippi. Loyola will take on Tougaloo College in a doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
