Carmelo LoSauro and the Wolf Pack fell in the series opener to SPSU

(Marietta, Ga.) Loyola University New Orleans fell 11-3 in the opener of a three game set against Southern Polytechnic State University on Friday afternoon at Sir Walter J. Kelly Sr. Memorial Field.

Southern Poly opened the scoring with a seven run second inning. 13 batters came to the plate in the inning, but the Hornets were able to score without an extra base hit in the frame. They were able helped out as they had four walks and a hit by pitch in the inning which helped chase Wolf Pack starter Jeffrey Castille from the game.

Southern Poly added another run in the third inning as Blake Barber tripled to deep centerfield and scored on a single by Jordan Williams.

The Wolf Pack pulled two runs back in the sixth inning as Garrett Lacour walked and Philip Cazayoux singled before Carmelo LoSauro smacked a double to deep right center field. Lacour scored on the play and Cazayoux scored when Turkish singled through the infield in the next at bat.

In the seventh inning, Loyola (9-21, 2-11) scored another run as Lacour doubled down the left field line to move Nevin Brown to third after his single up the middle. Brandon Snow grounded out to the shortstop with one out to score Brown.

However, Southern Poly (17-6, 7-3) were able to keep the comeback at bay by scoring a run in the sixth as Chris Dykes singled to left which scored Tyler Roach from second base. Southern Poly added two more runs in the seventh as Roach singled with the bases loaded to score Chad Livingston and Barber.

LoSauro went 2 for 5 on the day with a double and a RBI, but every hitter in the Wolf Pack lineup finished the game with a hit. Lacour was 1 for 2 with a double, a run, and two walks.

Blake Barber had a 2 for 5 game with three runs, a RBI, and a walk from the Hornets’ leadoff spot. Williams was 2 for 4 with two RBI’s and Roach was 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs, two RBI’s and a walk. Nine different Hornets finished the game with at least an RBI.

Jeffrey Castille (1-4) took the loss for the Wolf Pack as he worked 1+ innings while giving up six runs, five earned runs on two hits and three walks. Justin Romaire relieved Castille in the second inning and finished with a line of two innings pitched while giving up three hits, two walks, two runs, and one earned run. Cameron Retif and Jared Belmonte finished the game by pitching the last five innings while giving up a combined three runs and seven hits.

Daren Wiltgen (4-1) earned the victory as he pitched 5.2 innings while giving up six hits and a walk on two earned runs while striking out three. Kevin Bibler followed Wiltgen by pitching 1.1 innings and giving up a run. John Butler and Troy Herterick finished off the game by each pitching a shutout inning.

The two teams will continue their three game series on Saturday afternoon in Marietta, Georgia with first pitch scheduled for noon eastern time.
