Loyola gears up for non-conference test against Nicholls

Jack Nicholson and the Pack will play against Nicholls State University on Tues.

(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball team will take on their first NCAA Division I opponent of the season when they face off against Nicholls State University at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18th at Ray E. Didier Field.

Loyola (5-4) opened their 2014 conference slate this past weekend as they won one of three games against the University of Mobile. They lost the opener 5-2, before Kevin Lindsey lifted the Pack to a 4-2 victory in Saturday’s opener. Mobile won the rubber match on Saturday afternoon, 3-0. Lindsey pitched seven innings while only allowing two unearned runs and seven hits in a complete game victory. Brandon Snow and Jack Nicholson each scored twice in the Wolf Pack victory to account for the four runs.

Nicholls (0-3) will be opening their home schedule on Tuesday evening. They began their 2014 schedule with a three game road set against the University of Houston. Houston won 3-0, 4-0, and 3-2 in the three games. Philip Lyons compiled a .250 average for the series as he went 3 for 12 with one double and collected the only two Colonels RBI’s as he knocked in Christian Correa and Leo Vargas in the series finale.

Nicholson is leading the Pack with a .448 average, 13 hits, eight RBI’s, and four doubles in nine games this season. Snow has crossed the plate a team best 10 times while stealing three bases. Britt Pellegrin has tallied the only Pack home run.

Stewart Campbell (0-0) will make his first collegiate start against Nicholls. The right-handed freshman from Luling, Louisiana has a 0.00 ERA so far this season in 2.1 innings of work. He has allowed only two hits and one unearned run while striking out three in three appearances out of the bullpen.

Mike Hanchar (0-0) will be pitching for Nicholls. The 6-5 lefty from Highland, Indiana is a transfer from Iowa Western Community College. He sported a 4-0 record and a 4.60 earned run average with 30 strikeouts in 29.1 innings of work last season for Iowa Western. He will be making his season debut against the Pack.
