Loyola has big fourth inning but falls to Rams

Karson Cullins had a run and a RBI in the Wolf Pack loss against Mobile

(Mobile, AL) Loyola University New Orleans scored four runs in the fourth inning but could not hang on as they fell 8-5 to the University of Mobile in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Jacobs Field in Mobile, Alabama.

Kevin Lindsey led a balanced Wolf Pack attack as he went 2 for 3 with two walks, two runs, and a RBI from the second spot in the order. Karson Cullins also had a good day as he was 2 for 4 with a run and a RBI in the fourth inning. Carmelo LoSauro, Britt Pellegrin and Daniel Pappas also collected RBI’s in the Wolf Pack loss.

Mobile jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning, but fell behind 5-2 thanks to Loyola scoring a run in the third and four in the fourth. Mobile was able to answer in the bottom of the fifth inning with six runs.

The top of the Mobile order did a lot of damage as Jared Brannon went 2 for 4 with a RBI and a run from the Ram’s leadoff spot. Brady King hit 3 for 4 with two RBI’s and a run as well as two steals from the second spot in the order. However, Jacob Knowles had the big hit in the fifth inning rally as the designated hitter collected two of his three RBI’s on a single that tied the game.

Daniel Posway (2-2) collected the loss as he pitched into the fifth inning. He allowed six runs in his four innings of work on seven hits and four walks while striking out two Rams. Joel Buhler relieved Posway and worked the remaining four innings while striking out four and allowing two runs.

Ryan Hines started for Mobile but was taken out in the fourth inning after allowing four earned runs on seven hits and three walks in 3.2 innings. Cole Vaughn (3-0) pitched 3.1 innings in relief, allowing seven baserunners and striking out two while collecting the victory. Josh Hollingsworth came out of the bullpen to collect his third save of the season after pitching a perfect ninth inning.

Loyola (6-15, 2-6) will be back on the diamond tomorrow for a doubleheader rematch with Mobile (8-8, 2-5). Opening pitch is scheduled for Noon at Jacobs Field.
