Loyola hits road for matchup with Nicholls State

Roco Gandara and the Pack face off with Nicholls State on Saturday

(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team will play their final exhibition contest of the season as they head north to Thibodaux, Louisiana for a 3:30 p.m. matchup with Nicholls State University on Saturday, December 7th at Stopher Gym.

The Wolf Pack (3-5) enter having lost two straight contests to SUNO and Dillard last week. McCall Tomeny led the Pack in scoring and rebounding as he averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds for the two crosstown games. This will be the third and final exhibition contest of the season after early season tussles with Tulane and UTEP.

Nicholls State (1-4) is coming off a 79-73 victory over UTSA which snapped a four game losing streak to open the season. Dantrell Thomas led four Colonels in double figures with 18 points while also leading the team with nine rebounds. Nicholls defeated Mobile, a SSAC opponent of Loyola, 72-64 in an exhibition contest earlier this season.

Tomeny leads the Pack this season with averages of 20 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest. The junior forward is shooting 47.1% from the field and 40% from the three point line, both of which also lead Loyola. Kyle Simmons is scoring 12.3 points per tilt and is second on the team with an average of 2.3 assists. Jalen Gray leads the squad with 2.6 assists nightly. Senior forward Roco Gandara leads the team with eight blocks and is second on the team with 5.4 rebounds per game.

Thomas tops the Colonels in scoring, rebounding, and assists with averages of 14.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.6 assists so far this season. Thomas also leads the team with seven steals and is tied with Travis Julien for the team lead with three blocks. Jeremy Smith averages 12.4 points and 4.0 rebounds.

The two squads last faced off on December 9th, 2011 as Nicholls came away 92-76 winners. Six Colonels scored in double figures that night led by 20 points from Bryan Hammond. The Wolf Pack received 20 points from Robert Lovaglio and 17 from Corey Gray. Tomeny tallied nine as a freshman starter for the Pack.
