New Orleans, La.- The Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s tennis teams earned the victories in their season openers over Tougaloo College Saturday afternoon in the UNO Tennis Center.
In their first action since 1995, the men’s team earned a 9-0 victory over the Bulldogs. In doubles play, Brian Pena and Carson Wahl defeated Douglas Walker and Stoney Lyons 8-0. The pairs of Jordan Hunting and Joshua Washington as well as Joshua Laviolette and Christian Manrubia downed their opponents 8-1.
In singles play, Loyola only dropped five games in 12 sets. Laviolette, Manrubia, and Hunting all earned 6-0, 6-0 victories. Washington and Pena dropped one game and Wahl defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-1.
On the women’s side, the Wolfpack defeated the Lady Bulldogs 5-4.
In doubles action, Claire Landry and Katie Beargie won handily over Symone Booth and Carmen Burton 8-1 for the Wolfpack. Frances Bonnin and Cristiana Krtalic won Loyola’s second doubles match with a 9-8 (7-5) win. The team of Alisha Regus and Cristen Sadduth won an 8-2 doubles pairing over Loyola’s Chelsea Keene and Loraine Torres.
In singles play, Landry, Bonnin, and Beargie all defeated their Tougaloo opponents to give Loyola the win in their season opener.
The Loyola women will return to action on February 18 against Quincy College at 2 p.m. at the UNO Tennis Center. Both teams will be in play on February 19 in a SSAC match up against William Carey. That tilt will be a 2 p.m. start at UNO as well.
