(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola men’s and women’s tennis teams will open the 2014 season with a road trip to Hattiesburg, Miss, where they will face Tougaloo College with the first serve scheduled for 9:30 a.m. followed by a matchup with West Alabama beginning at 3 p.m.
The Wolf Pack women’s tennis program is entering its fifth year while the men return for a fourth season. Both squads enjoyed program highs in victories last season. The women matched their 2012 season-high four wins and went 4-11 in 2013. The men have improved their record in all three years of competition, culminating with a 5-10 record last season.
The women’s team boasts six returners and the men’s squad welcomes back three Wolf Pack players. Both sides look to infuse a combined seven freshman into the Wolf Pack team. Head coach Chad Mann is entering his inaugural season with the Loyola tennis program.
“I’m very excited about the group we have,” said coach Mann. “It is a very close-knit team. Our experienced captains in Meghan and Tony will lead a great new freshman class.”
Junior Meghan de Baroncelli looks to lead the way for the women’s squad. Last season, she went 8-8 in singles and 6-10 in doubles. De Baroncelli scored the lone victory for the women’s team in the SSAC Tournament, defeating Spring Hill’s Shelby Fritscher 7-5, 6-0 at the top singles position. At the end of the season, she captured a Champions of Character award.
The returners are rounded out by senior Chelsea Keene, junior Cristiana Krtalic, and sophomores Kanda Borgognoni, Madeline Smith and Wesley Dejoie.
The women’s team will add freshmen Alexa Mancuso, Lauren Rosales, Maggie McGonigal and Melissa van Wuijckhuijse.
The men’s squad also will be looking to improve when three freshmen join an experienced group of four SSAC competitors.
Junior Eduardo Garcia earned four doubles victories and four singles wins in 2013. He aided in a sweep of Tougaloo College in the second half of a double header in March, posting singles and doubles victories without losing a game.
The additional returners for the men’s squad include junior Tony Benjamin and sophomore David Mayhall.
The men’s team will welcome freshmen Federico Mercado, Marcos Guayasamin and Trivesh Singh.
