MOBILE, Ala. - The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team defeated Spring Hill College 85-81 inside Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center and moved to 14-8 on the season, 6-7 in SSAC play. The Badgers dropped to 10-10 and 5-8 in conference.
The first half was a back and forth battle between the two squads that saw six total lead changes. Loyola took a 40-33 lead to halftime.
Corey Gray shot a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc in the first half. The senior guard finished with 27 points, shooting 7-13 from the field. With his performance today, Gray surpassed Jonathan Hernandez (1,238) and now ranks 13th on Loyola’s all-time career scoring list with 1,257 points.
The Badgers battled back at the beginning of the second half, producing a 12-2 run to gain the lead at 49-48, their first since the 8:48 mark in the first half.
Later, the ‘Pack produced a 5-0 run to claim a 74-70 lead with three minutes remaining. Then, Corey Gray converted eight free-throws in the final 1:15 of the game, with Cameron Cates icing the game with a free throw of his own in the final seconds, as the Wolfpack celebrated a 85-81 victory.
Cameron Cates and McCall Tomeny contributed great efforts as well towards this afternoon. Cates scored 20 points on 7-11 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. The senior center accomplished his second 20+ scoring game on the season. Furthermore, Tomeny scored 18 points on 8-12 shooting, including 1-1 from three-point range, and grabbed four rebounds.
“It was a total team effort today. Our guard decision making was huge down the stretch and our inside players grabbed clutch boards late in the game,” stated Loyola head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando. “Spring Hill gave us everything we could handle.”
The Wolfpack earned their first two game season sweep of Spring Hill since the 2007-08 season. The ‘Pack now lead the overall series 69-60. Coach Giorlando garnered his 99th victory with the Wolfpack.
Freshman center Jake Thelen almost registered a double-double for the Badgers, tallying 25 points and nine rebounds. Thelen shot 11-16 from the floor and 3-4 from the free throw line. Alex Looney and Todd Martin also notched double-digit points this afternoon with 16 and 12 points respectively.
Loyola’s next contest will take place February 8 inside Lakefront Arena at 7 p.m. against the University of New Orleans Privateers.
