JACKSON, Miss. – The Loyola University of New Orleans men’s basketball team suffered their second consecutive conference loss as they fell to Belhaven 82-89 inside Heidelberg Gymnasium. The Wolfpack drop to 11-7 overall and 3-6 in SSAC play, while the Blazers jump to 10-11 and 5-5 in conference.
The two squads saw solid first half performances from their big men. Loyola’s duo of McCall Tomeny and Cameron Cates recorded 19 of Loyola’s 28 points. On the other end, the Blazers focused on high percentage shots inside, shooting 64% from the field, as they took a 35-28 lead into halftime.
The ‘Pack’s offense gained momentum in the second half, cutting a 15 point lead to six points with one minute remaining in the game. Yet, Daryl Arnold, Andrew Marshall, and Woodie Howard continued their great performances on the day, as the Blazers trio guided Belhaven to their fourth straight victory.
Cates finished the day with a career high 28 points, going 9-14 from the field and 10-12 from the free throw line. Cates also led the team with seven rebounds. In addition, Chris Joseph tied his career high of 18 points, shooting 6-8 from the floor, 1-1 from beyond the arc, and 5-5 from the line. Loyola shot 48% in the contest, 81% from the free throw line, and 2-10 from three-point range. The Wolfpack lost the rebounding battle 29-31.
Daryl Arnold led Belhaven with 21 points, shooting 8-14 from the field. Andrew Marshall tallied 18 points on 9-13 shooting, while Woodie Howard also registered 18 points, shooting 6-12 from the floor. The Blazers shot 57% from the field, knocked down 23 of 29 free throws, and recorded 16 steals.
The ‘Pack return to The Den January 26 for their next contest against William Carey at 7:30 p.m.
