NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team suffered their first defeat of the 2010-11 season on Saturday night, losing 90-85 against St. Thomas (FL) University at The Den.
St. Thomas (1-1) led 45-43 at the break and never let the Wolfpack regain the lead the rest of the way. Ryan Brock, who led Loyola with a game-high 29 points, cut the deficit to 85-82 after a three-pointer with under two minutes remaining.
Following a pair of St. Thomas free throws, Corey Gray, who had 21 points for LU, nailed his third three of the night with 20 seconds left to make the score 87-85. However, the Bobcat’s Ian Gregory would hit three free throws down the stretch to seal the 90-85 victory.
Along with Brock and Gray, Loyola (3-1) was led by Cameron Cates with 15 points. Tommy Stangl paced the offense with six assists.
St. Thomas had four players in double figures in scoring, led by Eugene Davis with 22 points. Jeffrey Remmington added 17 while David Nesbitt and Gregory had 11 each.
The ‘Pack grabbed an 18-11 early on, but STU answered with an 8-0 run to take a one-point lead with 9:25 left. The Bobcats led by as much as nine in the period before a pair of Cates’ free throws made the score 45-43 at the intermission.
Loyola was able to even the score on two different occasions after the half before St. Thomas went up 58-51 on a basket by Davis at the 13:54 mark.
The Wolfpack continued to hang around, pulling within three at 74-71 on a field goal by Brock with less than seven minutes left. However, LU would not get any closer than two following Gray’s late three-pointer as the Bobcats held on for the win.
STU out rebounded Loyola 44-32 and finished the game shooting 48.3 percent (29 of 60). LU shot 44.4 percent (28 of 63) and 33.3 percent (5 of 15) from behind the arc.
Loyola is back in action on Friday, Nov. 19 at Emmanuel College. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
