Loyola men’s basketball falls to Martin Methodist

McCall Tomeny scored a team best 13 points, but the Pack lost to MMC

(Pulaski, Tenn.) Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team fell 59-48 to Martin Methodist College on Saturday afternoon in the Robert E. Curry Christian Life Center.

Loyola took the lead 6-4 on a McCall Tomeny putback with 16:04 remaining in the first half, but the Redhawks wouldn’t trail the rest of the game as they responded with six straight points. The Pack trailed by 1, with 9:09 left in the first half but Martin Methodist scored eight of the next nine points thanks to five straight from Brandon Hunter.

The Pack (4-17, 3-11) opened the second half on an 8-2 spurt to cut the deficit to two with 15:42 remaining, but the Redhawks (14-7, 9-4) countered with 10 straight as Robert Boyd hit two three pointers and Andrei Hall added four to push the lead to 41-29 with 12:59 left in the game. The Pack were unable to get closer than nine the rest of the contest.

Tomeny led the Pack with 13 points, while Roco Gandara pulled down 13 rebounds to go with eight points. Jalen Gray tallied five assists while Kyle Simmons recorded four steals. The Pack shot 31.1% for the game but only 2-20 from behind the three point line. They outrebounded Martin Methodist 40 to 35 thanks to 18 offensive rebounds.

Reginald Porter scored 15 points and added 11 rebounds to lead Martin Methodist. Boyd added 13 points while Darius Woods led the team with five assists. The Redhawks shot 45.1% from the floor and converted 3 of 13 three pointers.

The Wolf Pack will be back in action on Thursday, February 13th at 7:30 p.m. as they host the University of Mobile in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer game at The Den.
