NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team (15-9, 7-7 SSAC) is set to host Belhaven University (14-12, 9-6 SSAC) this Thursday night inside The Den. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The Wolfpack are coming off of a big 86-76 conference victory over Faulkner on Saturday in which all five starters scored in double-digits. Both McCall Tomeny and Robert Lovaglio achieved their third double-doubles on the season, recording 17 points and 12 rebounds each.
Saturday’s victory moved the ‘Pack to sole possession of third place in the divisional race at 1.5 games back. Belhaven sits atop of the division with Mobile just one game out in second. Also vying for the final spots in the SSAC tournament are William Carey, Spring Hill, and Faulkner, who are 2.0, 2.5, and 3.5 games back respectively.
The Wolfpack suffered a 82-89 defeat inside Heidelberg Gymnasium on January 21 when they last took on the Blazers. In that game, Cameron Cates scored a career high 28 points while Chris Joseph tied his career high of 18.
Loyola has won four of their past five conference games, scoring 80+ points in three. The Wolfpack are averaging 74.63 points per game, seven more than the Blazers. In addition, the ‘Pack will put their impressive 10-2 home record up against Belhaven’s 3-8 road record.
Daryl Arnold leads the Blazers with 15.32 points per game. The senior forward tallied 21 points in the previous contest, along with Andrew Marshall and Woodie Howard’s 18 points each.
Thursday’s contest is also Loyola’s Annual Cancer Awareness Game benefiting the Play 4Kay Charity and the Coaches vs. Cancer Program. The event was organized by the Athletics and Wellness Student Leadership Council that is comprised of student leaders from each athletic team and student employee staff.
T-shirts commemorating the event will be on sale for $10 Monday through Thursday in the Danna Student Center on Loyola's campus from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Shirts will also be on sale at Thursday's games.
Anyone purchasing a t-shirt or making a contribution to the effort will receive a coupon for a free serving of gelato from la Divina Gelateria, while supplies last. There will also be an auction of autographed basketballs from the men's and women's basketball teams. The women's ball will be auctioned during halftime of their game with the men's auction happening during their half time.
