NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team (14-8) will renew their backyard rivalry with the University of New Orleans (14-11), as both teams search for their 15th win on the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, inside the Lakefront Arena.
The Wolfpack will play their final non-conference game before finishing the season with five divisional games, that include the two teams that sit in front of them in the standings, Mobile and Belhaven. Loyola has won three of their past four games. Head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando currently has 99 victories in his career at Loyola.
Wednesday’s contest serves as the home finale for the Privateers. UNO is 11-2 inside the Lakefront Arena this season, and has never lost to the Wolfpack at home. Loyola is 6-1 on the year against in-city foes including sweeps of Xavier and Dillard, while splitting an in-season home-and-home with Southern University New Orleans.
Loyola is averaging 74.18 points per game and is shooting 45% from the field, 36% from beyond the arc, and 74.1% from the free throw line (third best in the NAIA). The ‘Pack last played UNO on January 14 at home, in which they won a late thriller 85-79. In the game, Corey Gray scored a season high 33 points, one shy of his career high.
Cameron Cates is averaging 12.77 points per game in his senior year. Cates tallied 20 points in the win over Spring Hill, his second 20+ scoring game in the past five games. Furthermore, Cates has recorded at least one block in the previous five games.
UNO is coming off of a 94-76 win over Florida Christian on Saturday. The victory featured the third double-double of the season for Antonio Wertz, who pulled down 16 rebounds with his 13 points. Wertz averages 10.8 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game. In addition, the ‘Pack will have to maintain UNO’s leading scorer Lovell Cook, who averages 14 points per game.
