Loyola Men’s Basketball Succumbs to Faulkner 54-37

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball squad could not earn their first victory inside Tine Davis Gymnasium as they fell 54-37 to Faulkner University Thursday night. The loss dropped the Wolfpack to 11-6 and 3-5 in SSAC play. They are 0-3 in the series in games played at Tine Davis.

Cameron Cates led the team in scoring with nine points on 3-9 shooting from the field and 3-7 from the free throw line. McCall Tomeny tallied eight points, shooting 4-6 from the floor, and Kyle Simmons and Corey Gray recorded eight points as well.

Loyola’s offense could not execute against Faulkner’s zone in the first half. With the ‘Pack down 7-9, the Eagles went on an 11-0 run, eventually taking a 27-12 lead, their largest of the stanza, into the locker room at the break.

The Wolfpack responded with tough defense of their own to start the second half, forcing three Eagles turnovers in their first three possessions. Loyola then proceeded to go on an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to six. However, the Eagles offense settled in and negated Loyola’s comeback bid, as they went on a 25-14 run over the last 12 minutes to seal the win for Faulkner.

Both Chris Palmore and Birama Konate registered double-double’s in the game for the Eagles. Palmore scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Konate recorded 10 points and 13 rebounds. Faulkner shot 49% from the field and 27.3% from three-point range.

Gray advanced to 15th on Loyola’s all-time career scoring list tonight. The senior guard passed James Bunn and Jim Hultberg as he now has 1,154 points in the maroon and gold.

Next, Loyola travels to Jackson, Mississippi on Saturday to battle Belhaven University at 4 p.m. in another SSAC West showdown.
