NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University of New Orleans men’s basketball team won 72-60 over William Carey Thursday night in The Den. The Wolfpack advance to 12-7 overall and 4-6 in SSAC play, while the Crusaders drop to 8-12 and 5-6 in SSAC competition.
The ‘Pack put the two game losing streak in the rear-view mirror, thanks to great three-point shooting by Corey Gray, who made four consecutive shots from beyond the arc in the first half. Gray finished with 26 points, his seventh 20+ points game on the season. The senior guard shot 7-15 from the field, 6-10 from three-point range, and 6-6 from the free throw line.
Cameron Cates and Chris Joseph also contributed double digit points towards tonight’s victory. Cates tallied 13 points, five rebounds, two blocks, one assist, and shot 9-10 from the free throw line. Joseph recorded 10 points on 4-8 shooting from the field and grabbed four rebounds.
Loyola took a 31-21 lead into halftime and remained vigilant in the second, as they shot 62.5% from the floor. The ‘Pack maintained a double-digit lead for all but 30 seconds in the second half, with their largest lead hitting 20 at the halfway mark. The Wolfpack finished with 20 points off of turnovers and 22 in the paint.
“I thought we played solid on both ends of the floor. We really took them out of their rhythm and forced some quick shots. We were focused and we were able to sustain our lead and close it out for the victory,” said Loyola head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando.
Jamal Doss, Roderick Little, and Donzedrick Smith led the Crusaders in scoring this evening. Doss nearly recorded a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, while both Little and Smith contributed 13 points each.
Loyola returns to action this Saturday for the Hall of Fame game against Auburn Montgomery at 4 p.m. inside The Den.
