New Orleans, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team will officially kick off their regular season Saturday afternoon, as they host Carver College at 2 p.m. in The Den. The Wolf Pack will also be in action on Sunday against Morehouse College at 3 p.m. in The Den.
The Wolf Pack returns to The Den after taking last year’s Southern States Athletic Conference title with a 20-10 overall record and an 11-7 mark in SSAC play. It was the first 20-win season since Jack Orsely’s 1947-48 squad, along with the highest regular season winning percentage (.679) since that same year.
Loyola is currently 7-1 in their season home openers under head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando, including a five-year win streak.
"We are excited the new season is finally here and are looking forward to seeing our team back on the floor. This year's team will be lead by our core returnees: Rob Lovaglio, McCall Tomeny, Steve Davis and Kyle Simmons. As usual, our success for tomorrow's contest will depend on our ability to control the boards and control the tempo to the game" said Giorlando.
Junior Robert Lovaglio and sophomore McCall Tomeny will return from last year’s starting squad to lead the Pack. Lovaglio, who was named All-SSAC last season, led the team with 6.9 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists per game. He finished last year with an average of 16.1 points per game and 50.9% shooting from the field. Tomeny recorded 11.3 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game, tabbing him to the SSAC All-Freshman Team last season.
In the NAIA’s Top 25 Preseason Poll released last week, Loyola’s men’s basketball team received 24 votes, garnering the 28th most votes in the poll. The first regular-season Top 25 Poll will be announced on December 4th.
