Austin Roark and the Pack will head to Montgomery for back to back SSAC games

(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team will open SSAC play with a road trip to Montgomery, Alabama to play Faulkner University and Auburn University at Montgomery. Loyola will take on Faulkner at 7:30 p.m. on November 15th at Tine W. Davis Gymnasium followed by a 5 p.m. tip on Saturday, November 16th against AUM at the AUM Physical Education Complex.

Loyola (0-1) will enter the tilt having played one official game, a 79-78 loss to Carver College. McCall Tomeny scored 31 points and pulled down 15 rebounds while Austin Roark posted career highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort. The Pack followed that game with two exhibition contests against NCAA Division I teams on the road. Loyola lost to Tulane University 103-74 despite 15 points from Mason Ibert. The starting backcourt of Jalen Gray and Kyle Simmons combined to score 25 points, but the Wolf Pack fell last weekend to the University of Texas at El Paso, 84-49.

Faulkner is the defending SSAC champion having beat William Carey in the final of the SSAC Tournament in 2012-13. Last season, both schools played in the western division, but realignment forced the second and third place teams in the SSAC West to the eastern division for the 2013-14 season.

Faulkner (4-0) was ranked 13th in the preseason NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll and will also be opening up SSAC play on Friday evening. In their most recent game, the Eagles defeated Carver College 93-81. Jamarious Alderson led the team with 14 points. Freshman Stephen Strachan has been the high scorer so far this season, averaging 14.3 points on the young season. Cortez Riley is averaging a team best 9.5 rebounds per game after pulling down 17 rebounds against Carver.

Auburn Montgomery (1-2) opened their season with a victory over Pensacola Christian followed by close losses to Concordia College-Selma and Point University. Four Warhawks are averaging in double figures led by LeShaun Murphy’s 19.3 average. Spencer Jones, Brandon Howard, and Da’Keidres Wade are all scoring between 11.5 and 12 points per game. Murphy also leads the squad in rebounding as he has pulled in 8.7 boards per game. Quay Davis leads the squad with eight assists on the season.
