Hattiesburg, Miss.- Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team opened their 2011-12 campaign with an 88-53 defeat Thursday night in an exhibition game against the University of Southern Mississippi in the Reed Green Coliseum.
The Golden Eagles had four players in double figures with Jonathan Mills leading the way with 22 points. He was 9 of 11 from the field and grabbed 13 rebounds, 10 on the offensive glass for the double-double. Maurice Bolden had 13 points, while Torye Pelham and Neil Watson added 10 points each to round out the leaders for USM.
Robert Lovaglio paced the Wolfpack with 13 points converting 5 of 9 from the field. Corey Gray was the only other Loyola player in double figures with 11 points.
USM enjoyed a sizable advantage on the boards securing 58 rebounds compared to 30 for Loyola. The Golden Eagles converted on 30 second chance points off of 22 offensive rebounds. They shot 45.6% from the field, while holding the Wolfpack to a 24.1% clip. USM made 8 of 22 field goals from distance.
Defensively, Southern Miss forced 16 Wolfpack turnovers that resulted in 21 points. They held Loyola to 1 of 13 shooting from behind the arc.
The Wolfpack opens the season officially on Thursday, November 3 against Carver Bible College in The Den. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m.
