Tomeny leads the Pack against Bethel

(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team will take on Bethel University at 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 22nd in The Den.

This will be the second meeting between the Wildcats and Wolf Pack. Bethel came away 82-74 victors at Baker Gymnasium on February 1st. The first half pitted two evenly matched squads as neither Loyola nor Bethel built more than a five point lead. The period featured eight ties and five lead changes. In the second half, Bethel mounted a 12-0 run to take over the contest. McCall Tomeny led the Wolf Pack with 20 points and seven rebounds on the night, the junior shot 6 for 11 from the floor and 8 for 10 from the free throw line.

For Bethel, Walt Andrews went 7 for 13 from the field on his way to a game high 19 points and a team best six boards. Cole Nelson chipped in 16 points thanks to going 12 for 12 from the free throw line.

On Thursday, Loyola (5-19, 4-13) fell 69-58 to Spring Hill College on Thursday night. Tomeny scored two of his 19 points on a putback layup in the second half to cut the Loyola deficit to four, but a 12-3 run by the Badgers effectively secured the game. Tomeny and Cameron Hill had nine boards, Hill chipped in 11 points while Daniel Kuhl added 13.

Tomeny leads the team with 17.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Jalen Gray tops the team with 2.8 assists per contest. Daniel Kuhl is 14th in the NAIA in free throw percentage at 85.3% while leading the team with 1.4 steals. The Wolf Pack are sixth in the NAIA in 3 point field goal percentage defense as they only allow their opposition to shoot 29.9% from the floor.

Bethel (18-9, 9-7) is coming off a 76-71 loss to Blue Mountain College on Thursday evening. Gary Pollard scored 18, while Mark Vaughn and Walt Andrews each tallied 16 in the losing effort. The Wildcats received votes in the most recent NAIA poll.

Pollard is leading the Toppers with 15.7 points this season. Andrews adds 14.1 points per game and a team best seven boards. Cole Nelson is the team’s main distributor with 6.3 assists per contest, which is 4th in the NAIA.
