New Orleans, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team dropped their opening round game of the GCAC Tournament, 67-51 against SUNO on Tuesday night at The Castle.
Loyola (13-17) led by four at the break, but SUNO opened the second period with a 17-7 run to go on top. The Wolfpack managed to tie the game up at 47 with less than nine minutes left, but three straight three point plays from the Knights kept Loyola at bay.
Ryan Brock led Loyola with a game-high 19 points. Robert Manson finished with 10 points and nine rebounds while Corey Gray came off the bench for seven points.
SUNO (13-14) was led by Lionel Green with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ricardo Porter had 14 points with Ronald Palmer and Brent Leduff scoring 13 each.
Loyola controlled most of the first half until Porter hit his third three of the game to give SUNO a 22-21 edge. After a dunk by Dometric Hayes capped off eight straight points for the Knights to go up three, the ‘Pack answered with an 8-0 run to take a 29-24 lead. A late free throw by SUNO put the game at 29-25 at the break.
After the early second half run, Green nailed a deep three to make the score 45-39. Following a basket by Palmer, Loyola picked up the defense which led to eight consecutive points by Brock to even the score.
On the next possession, Green hit another three, then Leduff followed with a basket and one to put SUNO up six at the 7:26 mark. Manson made the score 53-49 with a bucket, but Porter answered with his fourth three of the night to put the game out of reach.
Loyola finished the night shooting 39.2 percent and struggled from behind the arc, making 1-of-10. SUNO shot 42 percent overall and made 9-of-17 three-pointers. The Knights out rebounded Loyola 34-32.
