Hattiesburg, Miss.- The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team hung tough with NCAA Division I opponent University of Southern Mississippi, but fell 78-67 Tuesday night at Reed Green Coliseum in an exhibition game for the Wolfpack.
Ryan Brock led Loyola with a game high 28 points on 12-16 shooting from the field. Richard Kohnke was a perfect 4 of 4 from behind the arc on his way to 12 points on the evening. Corey Gray added 14 to round out the leaders for the visitors.
Southern Miss had two players with double doubles. Maurice Bolden had a team high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Gary Flowers led USM on the boards with 14 rebounds and added 12 points. R.L. Horton finished with 15 points. The contest counted as a regular season game for USM, who improved to 21-6 on the season.
Both teams were effective shooting the ball. Loyola converted 26-50 for 52% from the field, 7 of 17 from beyond the arc for 41.2% and 8 of 10 from the free throw line for 80%. USM was 29-61 (47.5%) from the field, 5-10 from distance (50%) and 15-21 from the charity stripe (71.4%).
The Golden Eagles enjoyed a sizable advantage on the boards outrebounding the Wolfpack 40-21. Sothern Miss converted 19 offensive rebounds into 21 second chance points. Loyola had five offensive rebounds and four second chance points.
Loyola (13-12, 5-5 SSAC) returns to action on Thursday in the home finale against William Carey (17-10, 7-3 SSAC). Tip off in this pivotal conference matchup in The Den is set for 7:30 p.m.
