Loyola men open season with Halloween tilt

(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball kick off their 2013-14 season with a game against Carver College on Thursday, October 31st at 7:30 p.m. at the Den. Fans are encouraged to wear costumes to the game with one lucky fan winning a weekend pass to VooDoo Fest.

The SSAC preseason coaches’ poll pegged the Pack for a fourth place finish in the western division of the SSAC and a sixth place finish overall. The Pack return 12 of the 13 players from last year’s team that finished 16-14 overall, 9-9 in the SSAC, and three wins over top 15 teams in the NAIA and reached the SSAC quarterfinals.

SSAC All-Tournament and SSAC All-Division performer junior McCall Tomeny returns to lead the Pack. Tomeny averaged 15.4 points and a team best 7.1 rebounds last season. The team also brings back point guard Kyle Simmons who led the squad in steals and assists last season while averaging 9.1 points per game. Last year’s starter Daniel Kuhl is joined in the backcourt by Mason Ibert, an SSAC All-Freshman team member last season, and incoming freshman Jalen Gray and Derek Graves. Center Nate Pierre rounds out the incoming players.

Last Year, the Wolf Pack opened their season against Carver and Loyola came away 78-59 winners thanks to 27 points from Robert Lovaglio. Tomeny had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Kyle Simmons joined the duo in double figures with 10 as the Wolf Pack shot 62.7% from the field while holding the Cougars to only 36.7% shooting. Nickolas Hood led Carver by shooting 6-14 from the field and finished with 18 points. Joe Comer and Julian Bratton each finished with 12 points for the Cougars.
