New Orleans, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team opens up the GCAC Tournament on Tuesday night when they head across town to The Castle to take on the SUNO Knights at 7 P.M.
Loyola (13-16, 5-13 GCAC) comes into the contest as the #9 seed after dropping their 10th straight game to close out the regular season. The Wolfpack looked to have snapped their losing streak on Saturday at William Carey with a remarkable comeback, but the Crusaders squeaked out a three point victory.
Junior Ryan Brock ended the season leading the GCAC in scoring for the second straight time at 21.3 points per game which ranks seventh in NAIA. He also ranks nationally in steals at 23rd with 2.1 per game. Senior Sean Bennett finished year ranked seventh in the GCAC in scoring at 16.3 ppg.
For SUNO (12-14, 7-11 GCAC), the Knights come into the game following a 79-76 upset win on the road on Saturday over GCAC Champion LSU-Shreveport. SUNO grabbed the #8 seed after winning three of their last four contests.
The Knights feature the conference’s third leading scorer, senior Lionel Green, at 18.8 ppg. Xavier Francis also ranks in the top ten at 14.1 ppg, while Ricardo Porter and Brent Leduff average 13.7 and 11.3 respectively.
For the season, the teams split the series with both winning at home. On Jan. 14, Loyola, led by Brock, Bennett, and senior Torry Beaulieu, overcame an early 16-point deficit to knock off the Knights 88-74. At The Castle on Feb. 4, SUNO shot 62 percent from the field to beat Loyola 88-70.
