(New Orleans, La.) - This weekend the Loyola University New Orleans men and women’s track teams will compete at the Tulane Team Challenge at the Tad Gormley Stadium at City Park. Admission is free for people to check out Loyola compete against University of New Orleans, Xavier University of Louisiana, Southeastern University, and Tulane University. The meet will be an all day event with throwing events starting at 9:30 a.m.
Head Coach Andy Canegitta looks forward to the meet this weekend after setting four school records at the LSU Twilight Invitational at the LSU Field House in the last indoor meet of the year. “The indoor season was a good experience for our newcomers and the returning athletes improved on their times from the 2012 indoor season,” said Canegitta, “I am confident that everyone will continue to get better as we work to achieve our ultimate goal of qualifying for nationals. This weekend will be the start of a promising outdoor season.”
The Wolf Pack squad was able to break four more school records at the LSU Twilight Invitational after having already beat five in the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama. The team will now move onto the outdoor track season.
In women’s track, Christina Guzman set a school record in the shot put by throwing 33’ 5’’ on her first attempt of LSU meet. The distance was nearly five feet further than the 28’ 7’’ mark by Harley Augustine whom held the previous record. Elizabeth Geinger set a personal best time in the 3000 meter run with a 11:21.85, a mark that was just two seconds short of the current school record. The women’s 4x400 team was a second short of setting a school record with a time of 4:26.08 just a second short of the 4:25 record set in 2010. This year’s 400 team consisted of Harley Augustine, Candace Johnson, Emma Larson, and Denise Powell.
For the men, Paul Freese set a new school record, running a 4:39.74 time in the mile surpassing the previous school record of 5:00 set by Kenny Tsao in February of 2010.
Claude Nelson also took down a school mark by running a 7.37 second 60 meter dash. The previous record was held by Alex Hall with a time of 7.68. This year’s men’s 4x400 team was also able to down a school record as Mario Ramirez, Nelson, Piero Ramirez, and William Maye completed the event with a time of 3:37.86 which bested the previous mark of 3:45 set in 2010. Jonathan Malbrue and Henry Gerbracht finished 10th and 11th in the men’s 3,000 meter with the times of 9:50 and 9:53 respectively. Carlos Flores finished with a 28’11’’ inch throw in the shot put event for the Wolf Pack field team.
“Our seniors are the foundation of this team. Alexandra Lain, Sarah Tortorich and Claude Nelson are looking to end their senior year on a high note. Tortorich and Nelson are looking sharp. Lain is getting stronger after coming off an ACL tear last spring. Although she is the Loyola record holder in the triple jump, she will only compete in sprints and relays,” commented Canegitta.
