Loyola to reveal top 20 dates in volleyball history

(New Orleans, La.) In honor of the 20th year of the volleyball program, Loyola University New Orleans will reveal a list of the top 20 dates in Wolf Pack volleyball history.

The countdown will take place within the 20 days leading up to the first home volleyball match of the season on September 4, where the Pack will take on SUNO. Fans can follow the countdown here as well as Loyola’s various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.


Top 20 Dates in 20 Years of Loyola Volleyball

#20: November 1, 2012 - Loyola capped a perfect 19-0 non-conference schedule with a 3-0 victory over crosstown rival Dillard. Lauren Brand and Kailey Tuthill each tallied seven kills in the victory.

#19: October 23, 2012 - The Wolf Pack defeated Mobile 3-0 as Katie Hamilton had 13 kills to help the team notch their 20th win of the season. It was the ninth time in 10 years Loyola won 20 matches in a season, the lone exception being the hurricane shortened schedule in 2005, which consisted of four games.

#18: October 9, 2010 - The 2010 Loyola volleyball team earned Coach Tommy Harold his 149th career victory, surpassing Greg Castillo's 148th win mark as winningest coach in Wolf Pack volleyball history.

#17: September 14, 2010 - The Wolf Pack opened home and SSAC play for the season with a 3-2 victory over Jesuit rival Spring Hill College. Sam Worsham tallied 55 assists to lead the team to the win.

#16: November 17, 2007 - Loyola competed in the NAIA Regional Finals. Despite falling to Mobile 0-3, Tiffany Stafford and Mary Seals were named Second Team All-Louisiana. Additionally, Stafford was named Region XIII Libero of the Year and Seals earned her third consecutive spot on the NAIA All-Region Team.

#15: November 10, 2007 - The women's volleyball team captured the 2007 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship at Dillard over the University of Mobile. Mary Seals earned her 600th kill of the season and was named Conference Player of the Week. She was nominated for the same honor on the national level.

#14: February 10, 2007 - Jennifer Leier became the first ever Wolf Pack volleyball player to be inducted into the Loyola Hall of Fame.

#13: September 1, 2006 - Hall of Famer Kelly Fridge broke the all-time Loyola digs record in a 3-2 victory over West Alabama. She surpassed the 2,117 digs mark achieved in 2002 by previous record holder Maggie Schaefer.

#12: August 17, 2005 - The 2005 Loyola volleyball team received votes in the NAIA preseason poll, ranking the Wolf Pack 33rd nationally. They were the only team in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference to acquire votes in the poll. Unfortunately, the 2005 season was shortened due to Hurricane Katrina.

#11: December 5, 2002 - The Wolf Pack won their first National Tournament game, upsetting (#21) St. Francis 3-1. Hall of Famer Maggie Schaefer was named GCAC MVP, NAIA Region 13 MVP and earned First Team All-Louisiana honors. She finished her career as Loyola's all-time leader in kills, attacks, digs, aces and hitting percentage.

#10: November 23, 2002 - Loyola defeated Spring Hill College in the GCAC Championship and would go on to beat them once again in the NAIA Region 13 Championship to book their spot in the National Tournament for the second consecutive year. In the regional match, Amanda Gilliard had 15 kills, including the game clinching spike over the Badgers.

#9: November 1, 2002 - With a victory over Mississippi College, Loyola completed its second 15-game winning streak in two seasons (2001, 2002).

#8: November 30, 2001 - The Wolf Pack made its first NAIA National Tournament appearance. Loyola fell short to Fresno Pacific 3-1.

#7: November 17, 2001 - Loyola defeated Dillard 3-1, earning the NAIA Regional Championship crown and a berth to their first ever NAIA National Tournament. A kill from Amanda Gilliard late in the third game provided the team with a surge of confidence and a 2-1 lead in the match. The win secured a program record 33 victories within a season.

#6: September 4, 2001 - The Wolf Pack garnered its first victory over Jesuit rival Spring Hill College 3-2. Melissa Showalter and Maggie Schaefer combined for 20 kills and 28 digs while Suzi Ruiz led the team with 24 assists.

#5: November 18, 2000 - Loyola appeared in the NAIA Regional Tournament. They were crowned GCAC Champions two weeks prior. At the conclusion of the season, head coach Greg Castillo was named GCAC Coach of the Year. Additionally, Suzi Ruiz and Maggie Schaefer were named All-GCAC. Ruiz, Schaefer and Jessica Smith also received All-Region honors.

#4: November 20, 1999 - The Wolf Pack wrapped up their season with a program record 23 wins, finishing as the runner up in their first appearance in the NAIA Region 13 Tournament. Jennifer Leier was named GCAC and NAIA Region 13 Player of the Year. Natalie Helwig and Maggie Schaefer earned All-Region 13 honors.

#3: November 6, 1999 - Loyola captured its first ever GCAC Championship, posting a perfect 3-0 record in the tournament. Jennifer Leier was named MVP with 39 kills. Natalie Helwig and Jessica Smith were named GCAC All-Tournament.

#2: September 10, 1994 - The Wolf Pack garnered its first volleyball victory in program history with a 3-2 win over Millsaps College. Ginger Sanderson led the Pack with seven kills and three solo blocks.

#1: September 3, 1994 - Head coach Debbie Surgi led Loyola volleyball in its first match in program history versus Rhodes College.
