(New Orleans, La.) Claude Nelson and Sarah Tortorich were named SSAC Track Athletes of the Week for their performance in the week concluding on March 17th. The Loyola University New Orleans runners were part of the team that participated in the Louisiana Classics race in Lafayette on Friday and Saturday March 15th and 16th.
Sarah Tortorich was the winner for all SSAC women’s track athletes as she participated in four events at the Louisiana Classics. The senior from New Orleans, Louisiana participated in the 200m dash, 400m dash, 4x100 relay team, and 4x400 relay team.
Tortorich ran a 26.02 time in the 200 meter dash on Friday evening which was less than a second short of the current school record that she holds. She set the school record of 25.27 set in a 2012 race in Mobile, Alabama. Tortorich then posted a time of 1:00.06 in the 400 meter race.
Tortorich was a part of the women’s 4x100 meter relay team that collected a school record with a time of 50.85. Tortorich ran the second leg after Candace Johnson and before Alexandra Lain and Etashat’e Hollins. The team bested the mark of the 1999 Wolf Pack squad who posted a 55.40 time.
Tortorich again ran the second leg for the women's 4x400 meter relay team as the squad put up a 4:14.55. Johnson, Emma Larson, and Lain helped best the previous school mark of 4:15 set in 2010 at a meet in Baton Rouge.
Claude Nelson also participated in four events at the Louisiana Classics as he ran the 100m dash, 200m dash, 4x100 relay, and 4x400 relay team.
The senior from Boston, Massachusetts came just short of breaking his own school record in the 200 meters by running a 23.50 second race. Nelson’s current school record of 22.76 was set in a 2012 race in Mobile.
Nelson posted a time of 11.42 in the individual 100 meter dash before leading off the 4x100 relay team. Nelson was joined on that relay squad by Mario Ramirez, Piero Ramirez, and Mark Robinson. The four Wolf Pack student-athletes ran a time of 45.02 which came in just ahead of the 45.82 school record. The 1996 team of Banks, Graham, Leahy, and Morse previously held the record.
Nelson ran the third leg of the 4x400 meter relay team. The team of Mario Ramirez, Piero Ramirez, and William Maye put up a time of 3:35.46 which beat the school mark of 3:38.6 which was set in 2010.
This is the first week that the SSAC has handed out player of the week awards for outdoor track and field.
The Loyola track and field team will be in action for the LSU Relays on Friday and Saturday, March 22nd and 23rd. The first event is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Friday and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
