Loyola Runs past St. Thomas (Houston)

HOUSTON, Texas- The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team opened their 2011-12 slate with an 85-55 victory over St. Thomas (Houston) Saturday afternoon from the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center. The ‘Pack got double-digit performances from four different players to earn the win against the Celts.

“It was a great way to start the season,” said head coach Kellie Kennedy. “I feel like everybody contributed in their own way.”

Senior Keiva Council got off to a hot start with her first double-double of the season scoring 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Council poured in her 21 points on 8-of-15 in 29 minutes of action. The 5-8 guard also contributed with five assists and six steals.

The sophomore tandem of Amy Moody and Jasmine Brewer combined to pace the ‘Pack. The second year duo both scored double-digits, Moody with 14 points and Brewer with 11. Brewer also racked up her first double-double of the season adding 10 rebounds.

Houston native Raven Lane made her official college debut scoring 11 points. The newcomer was 4-for-5 from the floor and added two steals in 17 minutes.

“Keiva, Jasmine, and Amy Moody played extremely well,” Kennedy added. “It was great to see them get off to such an amazing start. But overall, it was a team win.”

As a team, the ‘Pack shot 53 percent (31-for-59) from the floor and 35 percent (6-for-17) from beyond the arch. LU held St. Thomas to just 30 percent shooting (15-for-50) and a 29 percent (2-for-11) clip from three.

Gabby Guzman led the Celts with a game-high 17 points on 4-of 8 shooting and 2-of-4 from three. Sheila Onyekwere added nine on 1-for-5, and Her'shiira Boone-Rodgers had eight on 2-of-6.

Loyola returns home for matchup against Florida Memorial. The two teams will square off on Saturday, November 5 at 2 p.m. in The DEN.

Meanwhile, fans can check the New Orleans Hornets French Quarter Flyers, the NBA team’s high flying dunk squad, as they headline in the Second Havoc’s Fan Fest presented by Fresco Café Tuesday, November 1. Fans will be able to see both the men and women’s basketball teams participate in a 10 minute scrimmage. There will also be a three point shooting contest featuring Council and Moody as well as men’s basketball team members Dylan Kremer and Corey Cray. The fan fest will also consist of several interactive contests including shootouts, dance contests, and a mini bike race where fans can win various prizes. Admission is free and open to the public.
