(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball will continue conference play with a road matchup against the University of Mobile Rams at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 23rd at H. Austill Pharr Gymnasium.
The Wolf Pack (4-11, 3-5) are coming off a 1-1 week in which they captured a 71-70 overtime victory on the road at Blue Mountain College followed by a 76-62 home defeat to Martin Methodist. McCall Tomeny who averaged 18.5 points and 12 rebounds in the two games. Freshman Nate Pierre earned his first two starts of his career last week and responded with six blocks. Kyle Simmons poured in 22 points in the Wolf Pack victory as he drilled three triples and shot 9 for 15 from the field.
The Rams (9-7, 4-3) are coming off a 2-0 conference week as they defeated Spring Hill and Bethel both by single digits. The two victories are part of a seven game win streak for Mobile, in which they have won four straight SSAC games. They opened their conference slate by losing three in a row. Brandon Morris scored 26 in their 84-76 victory over Spring Hill and 16 in the Rams 78-73 victory over Bethel. Kwame Beard tallied 33 points and 12 rebounds for the week.
Tomeny leads the Pack with 18.3 points and 9.25 rebounds per tilt. Kyle Simmons boosted his scoring average to 11 points per game after his hot shooting this past week. He is neck and neck with Jalen Gray for the team lead in assists, Gray holds a 2.5 to 2.4 advantage. Pierre is averaging 1.1 blocks per game to pace the Pack.
Morris fronts the Rams with 17.4 points and 1.5 steals per game. Beard averages 10.5 points while Cody Scott scores 12.1 per game. Julien Sargent is scoring 9.8 points per game and is leading the team with 5.6 rebounds per contest. Beard is leading the team with 3.93 assists per game
The Pack boast a top 25 defense in the NAIA in both 3 point field goal percentage defense (30.5%, 17th) and scoring defense (69.3 ppg, 23rd). However, they will be challenged by the Rams scoring offense which is 13th in the country in 3 point field goal percentage (37.8%) and 19th in field goal percentage (48%).
Mobile currently sits in fourth place in the competitive western division of the SSAC. The Wolf Pack is sixth in the eight team division. The Rams and Wolf Pack have squared off 42 times in Loyola’s new era of athletics, and the Rams hold a 25-17 edge. Mobile has won six of the past seven matchups including both contests last season.
