(Westwego, La.) Loyola University New Orleans swept a doubleheader from Southern Wesleyan University 2-1 and 7-3 behind the arms of Kevin Lindsey and Joel Buhler on Friday night at Segnette Field.
Game 1: Loyola 2 Southern Wesleyan 1
Karson Cullins had a two out, two RBI single and Kevin Lindsey pitched a complete game five hitter to propel the Pack to a 2-1 win in game one of the doubleheader.
Both Wolf Pack runs crossed in the third inning as Alexander Lorenzo led off the inning with a single to right field. Harold Toscano followed with a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Phil Cazayoux hit a ball up the middle to put runners on the corners. Cazayoux advanced to second base on a stolen base, and Cullins dropped a base hit into left field to plate both Lorenzo and Cazayoux and give the Pack a two run lead.
The Warriors scored in the fifth inning when Zach Oberlies had a one out single through the left side of the infield. Joe Boudolf followed with a single into centerfield. Then Andrew Howard hit a flare into shallow right field which brought home Oberlies.
Kevin Lindsey (5-6) pitched a complete game, limited the Warriors to five hits and one run, and struck out two SWU batters. Cullins fueled the Pack offense with two hits and two RBIs in three at bats. Cazayoux and Lorenzo each contributed one hit and one run to the home team victory.
Matt Buss (2-5) earned the loss for Southern Wesleyan, giving up five hits and two runs despite dealing five strikeouts. Oberlies notched one hit and one run, while Howard knocked in the single run for the Warriors.
Game 2: Loyola 7 Southern Wesleyan 3
Joel Buhler allowed only two hits and one walk through six innings while recording 10 strikeouts en route to a 7-0 lead in the nightcap..
Loyola scored two runs in the first inning as Cullins launched a double to the warning track in centerfield. He came home to score as Snow singled into right centerfield. Snow then stole second and came home when Carmelo LoSauro singled through the hole on the right side of the infield.
Cullins again started a Wolf Pack rally in the third when he doubled down the line in right field. Snow walked, and then moved to second as Cullins went to third on a wild pitch. After two outs, Allen Newman had a pinch hit walk. Lance Licciardi then hit a grounder to the third baseman J.J. Julien. Julien tried to tag out Snow, but failing to do so he fired to first, but the throw was high and went into the Warriors dugout allowing Cullins and Snow to score on the play.
Loyola added another in the fourth as Cazayoux singled off the pitcher’s glove and then went to second on a Cullins walk. Cazayoux scored on Snow’s double down the left field line.
The Pack struck again in the fifth as Licciardi was hit by a pitch, Harold Toscano singled to right and Garrett Lacour was hit by a pitch. Cazayoux singled up the middle to score Licciardi’s pinch runner, Andrew Fournet, and Toscano.
Southern Wesleyan pulled two runs back in the seventh with a two out rally which saw Julien and Daniel Williams single. Then Tyler Bice reached on a grounder to third that saw Brian Reaney drop Nicholson’s throw. Julien scored on the play and Williams came home on Michael Hyman’s single to center. The Warriors added another run in the ninth.
Buhler (4-6) finished with seven innings pitched, five hits allowed, and two unearned runs. He recorded his second double digit strikeout performance of the season. Stewart Campbell worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Connor Thurman pitched the ninth allowing one hit, one walk, and one unearned run to score.
Andrew Howard (1-3) took the loss as he pitched 2.2 innings and gave up five hits, four runs, two earned runs, and three walks. Justin Adams relieved him and pitched 2.1 innings while giving up four hits and three runs. Kalin Smith followed with three shutout innings only giving up three hits.
Cazayoux was 3 for 5 with one run and two RBI’s atop the Wolf Pack order. Cullins had a 2 for 4 game with two doubles and two runs. Snow scored twice and knocked in two as he went 2 for 4 at the plate. Toscano scored once as he went 2 for 2.
Hyman led the Warriors as he notched one RBI as part of a 2 for 4 game. Williams had a 2 for 3 nightcap with one run.
The two teams will complete their three game set on Saturday as the Wolf Pack honor their seniors. First pitch is at 1 p.m. After the game, the Wolf Pack baseball team will host a free baseball clinic for members of the Loyola community. Saturday is also the last day to bid on the camouflage jerseys that the Wolf Pack sported during Friday’s doubleheader. Proceeds from the jersey auction will be given to the Wounded Warrior Project where they will benefit wounded service members.
