MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola University men’s and women’s tennis teams each lost a pair of conference matchups against the University of Mobile and Spring Hill College on Saturday afternoon. The men lost, 8-1 and 8-1, while the women fell, 7-2 and 7-2.
In the morning match against Mobile, Claire Landry and Frances Bonnin started out strong for the Wolfpack at number one doubles. The pair was down, 7-4 faced elimination on match point, but rallied to take the game and the next four after that to take the 9-7 victory.
Bonnin played another very tight match at number three singles, grinding out a three-setter over Nancy Machen, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), (7-5).
On the men’s side, Joshua Laviolette earned a win at number two singles when his opponent, Guilherme Lorencon, could not complete the match.
Against Spring Hill, Landry and Bonnin each earned singles wins at number one and three singles, respectively. Landry defeated McCall Hedrick after she defaulted when the score was 2-2. Lynne Fritscher also defaulted, down 1-0 against Bonnin.
The Bonnin-Landry doubles team put up a hard fight against Fritscher and her sister Shelby at number one doubles, but lost in a close one, 8-5.
In the men’s number one singles match, Loyola’s Brian Pena earned a dominant victory over Burke DeFraites, 6-0, 6-0.
The teams will wrap up their regular seasons with road matches on April 16 against Belhaven and Tougaloo. When the teams played in New Orleans earlier this season, both the men and women defeated Tougaloo and took losses against Belhaven.
