Toren Arnold will attempt the 800m race at the SSAC Championship

(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s track and field teams will head to the Southern States Athletic Conference Championship meet. The teams will compete at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Alabama on April 25th and 26th. Field events will start at noon on Friday while races will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday will see all events beginning at 11 a.m.

Denise Powell will spearhead a group of Emma Larson, Jessica Williams, and Kennedi Henneberger in the 800m race. Powell ran the school’s top 800 time of the season this past weekend at the Southeastern Lion Invitational. Powell finished with a mark of 2:29.25. Henneberger was less than a second behind Powell with a 2:30.14. Henneberger is also slated to take part in the 1500m and 3000m Steeplechase races. The four of them will team up for the 4x800m relay.

Mike Corso took third place in the 3000m race with a time of 9:16.79 this past weekend at the Southeastern Lion Invitational. He set the school’s 5000m mark earlier this year at the Mississippi College Twilight Invitational. Corso’s mark of 15:49 defeated Paul Freese’s record which was set during the 2013 season. Both Freese and Corso are slated to run in the 1500m and 5000m races.

Toren Arnold will take part in the 800m race after setting the school record three times this season. Most recently Arnold ran a time of 1:56.35 at the USA Invitational on April 12th. Prior to the season, Joe Kutner had held the school mark with a time of 2:02.42. Arnold needs to shave three seconds off his record time in order to qualify for NAIA Nationals.

Justin Johnson will run in the 200m and 400m races as well as the 4x100 and 4x400m relays. Johnson set the school record in the 200m race at the Tulane Team Challenge. Johnson’s mark of 22.68 broke Claude Nelson’s record of 22.75 from 2013.
