(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s track and field will head to Rome, Georgia for the 2013 SSAC Championship meet on Maddox Track at Barron Stadium. The two day event will begin Friday with throwing events at 2:00 p.m. and running events set to begin at 4:00 p.m. Saturday will kick off with field and track events slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. eastern time.
Loyola will compete against track and field athletes from Lee, Brenau, Emmanuel, Spring Hill, Brewton-Parker, and William Carey. Brenau will only field a women’s team while the rest of the schools will challenge the Pack in both men’s and women’s events.
In their last meet at the Southeastern Lion Invitational in Kenner, Louisiana, the Wolf Pack broke their 15th school record of the outdoor season as Claude Nelson set the new school mark in men’s 200 meter dash with a time of 22.75, which barely bested the mark of 22.76 which Nelson set in 2012. Sarah Tortorich posted times of 12.73 in the 100 meter dash and 25.95 in the 200 meter dash which fell .2 and .7 seconds short of new school marks, respectively. Nelson and Tortorich each earned their second SSAC track athlete of the week honors for their performance at the Southeastern Lion Invitational.
Nelson, Tortorich, and fellow senior Alexandra Lain will be competing in the last meet of their careers at the SSAC Championship.
Lain, a New Orleans native, is a sprinter for the Wolf Pack who has competed in the 200 meter and 400 meter races. She will end her Loyola career with two school records as she was part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams that shattered records earlier this season. Lain also holds the school mark in the triple jump with a distance of 36-6.25 which she set as a sophomore.
“Alexandra is the school record holder in the triple jump and has been a huge asset in building our sprints and jumps program. Unfortunately injury has kept her out of the last couple meets and will do so again this weekend.”
In addition to joining Lain on the record setting relay teams, Tortorich also holds the school records in three individual events. Tortorich will leave the Pack with school records in the 100 meters (12.53), 200 meters (25.27), and 400 meters (57.76).
“Sarah has had a record breaking four years, and I expect her to continue that excellence this weekend. She has a good shot at winning and breaking some school records as she competes in five events this weekend. She will also participate in the long jump for the first time in her collegiate career.”
Nelson also will leave the Pack with school records as part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams which posted school record times at the Louisiana Classics meet on March 16th. Nelson holds the top time of the season in the 100 meters as he posted an 11.42 second time. Nelson and will also depart with the 200 meter school record set last weekend.
“Claude has had a tremendous four years, especially since he had never run track prior to Loyola. He has gotten stronger throughout his four years, and I think he is going to run great at the conference championship meet. He also threw the javelin well at practice and will be competing in that for the first time this weekend. ”
