NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team extended their winning streak to five-matches with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-15) shutout against Belhaven University on Tuesday night at The Den.
With the win, Loyola (19-11, 3-1) stays a half game behind Mobile in the SSAC West Division standings, who sit at 4-1.
Gina Gill paced the Wolfpack with 16 kills while Ashley England finished with 10. Sabrina Stansberry added nine kills while Lindsay Mullinix chipped in with seven.
Samantha Worsham led the ‘Pack with 38 assists and four aces. Kaki Johnson had nine digs while Gill finished with eight.
LU jumped on Belhaven (8-10, 0-4) early, taking a 10-5 lead after back-to-back aces from Worsham. Leading 13-8, Gill capped a 5-0 run with a kill to give the ‘Pack a commanding 10-point lead. The Blazers were able to put together a late rally before a Stansberry kill ended the set, 25-17.
In game two, Belhaven used four straight points to break an early tie, taking a 9-5 lead. Loyola was able to grab their first lead at 20-17 after a 6-0 run, which included two more aces from Worsham. The Blazers fought back to even the score at 22, but following a Mullinix kill, two errors by Belhaven gave LU a 25-22 win.
Loyola opened up set three by scoring the first five points, forcing a timeout by Belhaven. The Maroon and Gold then extended their advantage to 14-6 on a Stansberry kill. The Wolfpack obtained their largest lead of the night at 21-10 on an assisted block from Gill and England. At match point, England spiked her career-high tenth kill, giving LU a 25-15 win to take the match in straight sets.
Loyola returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 19, when they travel across town to face the SUNO Lady Knights at 7 p.m.
