Loyola volleyball comes out on top in five set thriller

(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team narrowly defeated second ranked GCAC competitor Southern University New Orleans in a five set match up 23-25, 26-24, 20-25, 25-20, 15-13 Saturday evening in The Castle.

Despite SUNO’s (13-11, 9-2 GCAC) first set advantage, Loyola (9-18, 5-8 SSAC) matched the Knights’ intense level of play to pull out a win in five games. Sophomore Eva Allen tied her season best with 16 kills to lead the Wolf Pack to victory. Sophomore Kaitlin Mohr tallied 13 kills while junior Lauren Brand and senior Sabrina Stansberry joined Allen and Mohr in double digits with 10 and 11 kills respectively. Additionally, senior Libby Collyer boasted a career high seven kills, topping her previous mark of five kills versus Belhaven on Oct. 1. Collyer went seven for 15 to reach a .333 hitting percentage. She also set a new personal defensive record, tacking on two solo blocks and five block assists.

The SUNO attack was led by senior Zipporah Washington with 17 kills on the night. Freshman Delores Tyler tacked on 15 kills while junior Christal Hollins and senior Sabrina Scott both added 10.

The Wolf Pack will compete in their final match of the regular season when they travel to the University of Mobile on Thursday, Oct. 31 for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
