Montgomery, Ala. – The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team’s season came to a close as they fell to Lee University, 25-23, 25-14, and 25-23, in the SSAC Tournament Semi-Finals on Saturday afternoon at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama.
The offense was led by sophomore Lauren Brand who recorded seven kills and junior Sabrina Stansberry who had six. Senior Samantha Worsham aided the attack with 15 assists. Defensively, Worsham and sophomore Becca Burnette each notched six digs. Senior Kailey Tuthill, freshman Kaitlin Mohr, and Stansberry all tabbed a block at the net.
Lee’s attack was powered by Irene Ojukwu who had 14 kills, while Paula Martins and Nicole Sumida each added 11. Sumida also notched five service aces and Camil Martinez recorded 39 assists. Lauren Williams, Martins, and Sumida all recorded five blocks apiece and Ojukwu tabbed 10 digs in the backcourt.
The Wolf Pack went 2-2 in the SSAC tournament after they lost the opening round to Spring Hill on Thursday, but followed it up with a win against Brenau University, forcing a tie-breaker with Brenau on Friday morning , with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals, in which the Pack was victorious. Loyola then defeated Belhaven University in a four-set match Friday afternoon, unfortunately for Loyola, their season came to a close on Saturday as they were swept by Lee University in three sets during the semi-finals.
Loyola concluded the 2012 season with an overall record of 28-9. They were 26-7 during the regular season, with a 7-7 mark in conference play. The Pack enjoyed their longest win-streak (11 matches) since the 2002 squad recorded 12 consecutive wins. In the NAIA, Loyola finished the season ranked 8th as a team in service aces per game (2.080) and total service aces (270). They ranked 27th in total kills (1677), 33rd in hitting percentage (0.243), and 35th in kills per game (12.900).
