NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team opened up home and SSAC play on Tuesday night at The Den and came away with a 3-2 (25-22, 15-25, 28-30, 27-25, 15-10) victory over Jesuit-rival Spring Hill College.
Kailey Tuthill led the Wolfpack with a career-high 20 kills and Gina Gill added 19 on the night.
Loyola (6-5, 1-0 SSAC) trailed 5-2 early in the first set, but fought back to even the score at 8-8. With the game even at 22’s, the Wolfpack scored the final three points which included an ace by Tuthill to take the opening set 25-22.
Spring Hill (5-2, 1-1) dominated the second game, winning 25-15. A kill by Yiting Cao, who finished with a game-high 33, put the Lady Badgers up 19-10. Cao then ended the set at 25-15 with an ace.
For the third game, Loyola held a slight 22-19 lead after a kill by Gill. Spring Hill battled back to even the set, and then won in extra points 30-28.
Trailing 18-11 in game four, the ‘Pack put together a run to close the gap at 24-21. A kill by Samantha Worsham, who led with 47 assists, started a 4-0 run to give Loyola a one point edge. Amanda Oldani delivered an ace to even the match with a 27-25 victory.
In the final set, the Wolfpack used another 4-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. Spring Hill managed to come within one before a block by Sabrian Stansberry and Katie Broadbent gave Loyola the match with a 15-10 win.
Along with Cao, Spring Hill was led by Abbey Roam with 11 kills and Cassandra Marchand with 10 kills. Taryn Nash finished with 51 assists.
Loyola will be back in The Den on Thursday night when they host SUNO at 7 P.M.
