(Shawnee, Okla.) The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team opened the season with a win and a loss on the opening day of play at the Oklahoma Baptist Tournament on Friday, August 23rd.
In the first match, the Wolf Pack swept Texas College (0-1) 25-11, 25-8, 25-14. Sophomore Eva Allen led the offensive effort with 10 kills and 1 error on 13 attempts, recording a .692 hitting percentage. Freshmen Wren Overesch and Daniela Leal each added six kills. Leal paced the team with 17 assists, two service aces and one block assist. The team combined for 19 service aces.
The Wolf Pack moved on to their second contest of the season with a matchup against Wiley College (1-1). Loyola fell in four sets to the Wildcats, 25-18, 28-26, 16-25, 25-22.
Overesch led the way with 12 kills in the second match. Senior Sabrina Stansberry and Allen also reached double figures with 10 kills apiece. Leal again led the team in assists as she tallied 41. Stansberry led the Pack’s blocking effort as she had one solo block and four assisted blocks. The team totaled 51 kills and 81 digs.
Loyola (1-1) was recently picked to finish second in the SSAC coaches' preseason poll.
The Pack will conclude tournament action tomorrow as they take on (#8) Mid-America Nazarene University at 11:30 a.m. and tournament host (#5) Oklahoma Baptist University at 4:30 p.m.
