NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Loyola volleyball team (2-2) returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 13 when they hosts Millsaps at 7 p.m. in The DEN for the first home match of the season. The Wolfpack enters the match after falling to West Alabama in a hard fought battle on the road last Tuesday. The Majors are coming off a 3-0 weekend at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis, Tenn. where they posted wins against Principia College, Belhaven University (Miss.), and Augustana College (Ill.).
“The team is excited to kick off the home schedule,” said head coach Tommy Harold. “The DEN is always a great place to play thanks to our incredible home crowd. We expect them to be there loud and proud Tuesday night.”
Despite the recent loss, the ‘Pack showed much improvement last week against West Alabama. Loyola struggled during the first set, but fought hard against their NCAA opponent to stay in the match. The ‘Pack hit .203 for the night where it averaged 13.2 kills per set. In addition, Loyola registered 9 service aces and 80 digs.
Senior co-captain Gina Gill led the team with 27 kills and 18 digs. With the addition of the 27 kills, Gill ranks 4th in the in kills per set with 4.5. Backing up Gill on the front line was senior middle blocker Lindsay Mullinix and junior outside hitter Kailey Tuthill recording 14 kills each. On the defensive end, senior co-captain Amanda Oldani finished right behind Gill with 17 digs, while junior co-captain Samantha Worsham collected 58 assists as well as 16 digs.
After starting the year 2-2, Millsaps picked up a four-game winning streak including a perfect tournament at the Rhodes Invitational going 3-0 where the Majors defeated Principia College (3-1), Belhaven University, Miss. (3-2), and Augustana College, Ill. (3-0). In the Majors’ win over the Principia Panthers, senior Maggie Tumminello, junior Raven Scott, and junior Mackenzie Westphal had 10 kills each, while sophomore Leanne Gilder added a match-best 24 digs. In the Majors’ second win, it would be junior Kasey Laird leading the team in kills with 18 and Tumminello leading the defense with 20 digs. The Majors’ final match at the Rhodes Invitational came against Augustana where they shut out the Vikings. Once again, Laird and Tumminello led Millsaps with Laird commanding the offense with 10 kills and Tumminello on defense with 16 digs.
Tuesday’s match marks the 31st overall meeting between Loyola and Millsaps with the Wolfpack going 15-16. The two teams first met in Loyola’s first volleyball season in 1994 and most recently met last season (9/29). Head Coach Tommy Harold is 7-5 against Millsaps in his Loyola volleyball career.
