(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team came away with one win and one loss on senior day, defeating Avila University 25-12, 19- 25, 25-12, 25-17 and falling to Xavier University 14-25, 25-11, 12-25, 18-25 in The Den on Saturday.
Despite falling in the second set, Loyola’s (8-17, 5-7 SSAC) offense was red hot through the rest of the match versus the Eagles. Four Wolf Pack players reached double digits in kills. Sophomore Kaitlin Mohr led the attack with a career-high 17 kills. Sophomore Eva Allen followed closely with 13 while junior Lauren Brand and senior Sabrina Stansberry racked up 10 and 11 respectively. Junior Becca Burnett served three of the team’s eight service aces. She anchored the passing effort with a team-leading 17 digs.
Avila (6-18, 0-5 HAAC) freshman Danielle Kaullen paced the Eagles offense with 17 kills. Freshman Tiffany Fifer chipped in with five. Sophomore Jessica Hicks and junior Anna Woods tallied four apiece.
The Wolf Pack tested Xavier, (16-7, 6-0 GCAC) forcing the second match of the day into four sets with a dominant performance in the second, but the Gold Nuggets proved to be too much for the Pack following intermission. Allen turned in another strong offensive effort, racking up 10 kills and two aces. Mohr and Brand added seven kills each while Stansberry and senior Shelby Plant both contributed five. Sophomore Kate Hamilton led the defense with 11 digs. Burnett and freshman setter Daniela Leal aided the passing squad with 10 digs each.
Junior Moira Kirk steadied the offense for the Gold Nuggets, scoring 14 kills on 26 attempts for a .423 hitting percentage. Juniors Chindeu Echebelem and Taylor Reuther produced a combined 21 kills.
The Wolf Pack will return to action in their final home match of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 22 when they face Spring Hill College at 7 p.m. in The Den.
