Loyola volleyball survives at Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. - The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team defeated Belhaven University in a close battle at Rugg Arena on Tuesday night, taking the conference match 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 24-26, 15-12).

Loyola (8-6, 2-0 SSAC) stays atop the league standings with the win, being the only undefeated team in the Western Division of the Southern States Athletic Conference. With the loss, Belhaven (8-7, 0-2 SSAC) is still searching for their first victory in the new league after falling in their opener to Faulkner University.

Junior Gina Gill paced the way for the Wolfpack, hammering out 16 kills and five aces. Freshman Sabrina Stansberry hit at a .450 clip, scoring 12 kills while serving a pair of aces. Sophomore Kailey Tuthill chipped in with six kills and four aces. The defense was led by junior Amanda Oldani with 13 digs.

The Lady Blazers’ Christina Jacques finished the evening with a match-high 18 kills. Leigh Anne Huddleston and Taylor Williams added eight kills each.

Loyola hit .279 for the match, scoring 54 kills in the win. In the decisive fifth set, the ‘Pack outhit Belhaven .467 to .235, giving LU an early SSAC road victory.

Loyola will face city-rival Dillard University at Dent Hall on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. before heading to Birmingham, Ala. for the weekend for four matches.
