NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team continued their winning ways on Thursday night, defeating Faulkner University 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-18) at The Den.
Gina Gill paced the way for Loyola (21-11, 4-1) with a match-high 19 kills. Sabrina Stansberry and Kailey Tuthill added eight kills each while Linsday Mullinix finished with six.
Samantha Worsham led the ‘Pack with 35 assists and 15 digs. Gill and Amanda Oldani each had 11 digs, and Stansberry chipped in with three blocks.
Loyola jumped on Faulkner (12-18, 1-5) early, scoring four straight points to take a 9-3 lead. The Lady Eagles managed to cut the deficit in half on an ace at 11-8, but then the ‘Pack used another 4-0 spurt to push the lead to 18-10 after a kill by Gill. The Wolfpack grabbed their largest lead at 24-14 on a Tuthill ace, then a Mullinix kill ended game one, 25-16.
Faulkner used a 5-0 run in set two to grab an early 8-4 lead. Following a Wolfpack error which gave the Lady Eagles their largest lead at 15-10, the ‘Pack responded with a 6-0 run. Stansberry finished the run with an ace to give LU the lead, and then the teams battled back and forth, playing to a 20-20 tie. Faulkner reached set point by scoring four of the next five points before a kill by Katie Broadbent gave Loyola the serve. A block evened the game at 24, and then LU completed the late comeback with kills from Tuthill and Gill to win 26-24.
In the final set, the ‘Pack doubled up Faulkner early, 8-4, and would not let the Lady Eagles come any closer. A kill by Gill gave LU a ten-point cushion at 17-7, and then Stansberry delivered the kill of the night, slamming an attack off the head of a Faulkner defender. Faulkner put together a late run to make the count 21-17, but Mullinix would notch the 25-16 win for Loyola with a kill.
The Wolfpack, winners of seven straight, are back in action on Tuesday, October 26 when they travel to Mobile, Ala. to face Spring Hill College at 7 p.m. The Lady Badgers are currently on a 16-match winning streak, with their last loss coming to LU at The Den.
