NEW ORLEANS, La. – It was an electrifying atmosphere tonight as the Loyola volleyball team picked up a victory in the season home opener Tuesday defeating Millsaps 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23). This win brings the Wolfpack 3-2 on the season.
“Tonight was good,” said head coach Tommy Harold. “We made some plays and we were aggressive. It was very exciting for the girls to play in front of the home crowd. Yet, we need to learn how to close out games. We had opportunities tonight to finish it quick, and we let them hang around longer than what it needed to be.”
Offensively, senior co-captain Gina Gill topped all attackers in the match with 22 kills. She also managed just two errors. Sophomore Sabrina Stansberry and junior Kailey Tuthill added eight each. Junior co-captain Samantha Worsham collected over 40 of the ‘Pack’s assists, while also adding 16 digs.
Defensively, the ‘Pack put up outstanding numbers. Five players recorded double digits in digs including senior co-captain Amanda Oldani and freshman Becca Burnett with a combined 66. Tutilll produced 25 and Gill had 22.
Millsaps Juniors Raven Scott and Mackenzie Westphal helped the Majors stay in the match with Loyola leading the team in kills. Scott tallied 12 and Westphal had 10. Junior Kasey Laird and senior Maggie Tumminello led the Majors defense collecting 15 digs each.
Next up, Loyola heads east for the first SSAC Cross-Over in Mobile, Ala. for a trio of matchups against Lee, Shorter, and Brewton-Parker. The ‘Pack will take on the Lee Flames Friday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. CST before a double-header Saturday, Sept. 17 against the Shorter Hawks at 10 a.m. CST and the Brewton-Parker Barons at 1 p.m. CST.
