NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team hosted Dillard University at The Den on Thursday night and came away with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-15) victory.
Gina Gill finished the night for Loyola (22-12) with a match-high 16 kills. Sabrina Stansberry also reached double figures in kills, tallying 10 while hitting .412.
Samantha Worsham assisted on 31 of 39 kills for the ‘Pack. Worsham also led the team with five aces, including three to end the match.
Amanda Oldani led with 16 digs while Ashley England and Katie Broadbent had two blocks each.
Loyola separated themselves from Dillard (16-9) in set one, using three kills to grab an 11-8 lead. The ‘Pack extended their margin to 20-14 on a Stansberry kill, and England ended set one with a kill, giving LU a 25-18 win.
Trailing 12-9 in the second game, the Lady Bleu Devils’ Valencia Wise, who led the team with 12 kills, served an ace to spark a 4-0 run, giving Dillard a one-point lead. DU pushed their lead to 19-16 on a Wolfpack error, but Loyola fought back to even the score at 22. After Dillard scored on a kill, Gill put down a pair of kills before a Stansberry ace gave the ‘Pack a 25-23 victory.
The Maroon and Gold led early in the third set, going up 11-6 after an ace by Oldani. Gill scored two kills to double up the Lady Bleu Devils, 16-8, and then a DU error made it 20-11. With the score 22-15, Worsham served three consecutive aces as Loyola took the match in straight sets.
Loyola returns to action on Saturday when they host the University of New Orleans at 1 p.m. The teams have split their season series so far, with Loyola winning the last match-up in five games.
