(Montgomery, Ala.) Ashley Rush’s layup with one second remaining in regulation gave Auburn University Montgomery a 54-53 victory over Loyola University New Orleans in women’s basketball Saturday afternoon in the AUM Physical Education Complex.
Loyola led for the entire game until Rush gave the Warhawks the lead with one second left. The Wolf Pack enjoyed a 14 point advantage, their largest of the game, on a Janeicia Neely jumper with 12:05 remaining to make it 46-32.
The Warhawks answered with a 17-3 run over the next eight minutes. Psachal Maize tied the score with a pair of free throws at the 2:03 mark. Neely was fouled with 1:18 to play and put the Pack back ahead, 51-49, with a pair of free throws.
Neither team scored over the next minute until Neely again was fouled and converted two from the charity stripe to extend the advantage to 53-49 with 18 seconds to play. AUM quickly converted a three pointer by Maise to cut the lead to 53-52. Neely was quickly fouled, but could not convert either shot from the line. On the next Warhawks possession, Katie Williams found Rush for the winning lay-in.
For AUM (21-8, 13-5 SSAC), Maize led all scorers with 17 points on 6 of 15 shooting from the field. Williams had 15 and Caitlin Cunningham grabbed a game high 10 rebounds. The Warhawks received votes in the last NAIA national poll.
Neely led the Wolf Pack (11-15, 8-10 SSAC) with 15 points and a team high eight rebounds. Katie Youngblood added 12 points.
Loyola converted 38.3% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc and 57.1% from the free throw line. AUM held an advantage from the line, connecting on 68.8% from the stripe, while 32.2% from the field and 25% from distance. Loyola held a slim margin in rebounds grabbing 38 to the
Warhawks’ 37. AUM forced the Pack into 21 turnovers, while committing only 14.
This game concluded the regular season for the Wolf Pack. Loyola will return to action in the SSAC Tournament in Montgomery starting on Wednesday, February 27th with an opponent and game time to be announced.
