Loyola women’s basketball gears up for conference weekend

(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team will travel to Franklin Springs, Ga. for a conference tilt with #23 Emmanuel College on Friday, Jan. 10 at 4:30 p.m. in the Williamson Basketball Arena followed by a trip to Central, S.C. where they will take on fellow SSAC member Southern Wesleyan on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the Historic Tysinger Gymnasium.

The Wolf Pack (8-6, 2-2 SSAC) rolled over the University of St. Thomas Houston 76-55 on Saturday afternoon to earn their second consecutive victory. Junior Janeicia Neely was the top scorer for Loyola, posting 16 points versus the Celts, and led her squad with six assists on the day. Neely paces the Pack in points per game (14.79) and assists per game (4.29). Her 60 assists on the season place her 17th in Division I in total assists. Senior Jasmine Brewer contributed 12 points and a team-best eight rebounds in Loyola’s most recent win. She tops the team in rebounds per game and steals per contest, averaging 7.93 and 2.00 respectively. Additionally, Brewer ranks 8th in Division I in field goal percentage (55.6). Junior Callie McNally anchors the blocking effort for the Wolf Pack with 10 to date.

The Lions (11-3, 3-1 SSAC) trumped Bob Jones University 75-45 Monday night. Junior Ashley Skelton commands the scoring effort for Emmanuel, notching 12.29 points per match up. Senior Joreshica Martin is collecting 6.57 boards per game while junior Mariah Davis is averaging 2.71 assists per game and ranks 9th in Division I in assist/turnover ratio (2.923).

The Warriors (3-7, 1-3 SSAC) fell to Erskine College 81-88 on Jan. 2. They will host Belhaven University on Friday evening before facing Loyola on Saturday. Freshman Cayse Branyon steadies Southern Wesleyan in points per game (14.50) and has tallied a team leading five blocks on the season. She ranks 10th in Division I in three-point field goal percentage (47.1). Senior Kiara Coleman secures the glass for the Warriors, averaging 5.6 boards per game. Sophomore Chelsie Waters aids the offense, turning in 3.40 assists per tilt.

With a victory over the Lions, Loyola would even the all-time series with Emmanuel College at three wins apiece. The Wolf Pack leads the Southern Wesleyan Warriors 2-0 all-time.
