(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team will open the 2013-14 season with a trip to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette to compete in an exhibition game on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.

Following their third year of competition in the Southern States Athletic Conference, the Wolf Pack is hungry for success and determined to return to the SSAC tournament as well as secure a spot in the national tournament.

A dominant player for Loyola the past three seasons, senior Jasmine Brewer is prepared to take this year’s Pack squad under her wing as the sole fourth year player and captain of the team. In 2012-13, Brewer ranked 15th in the NAIA Division I in offensive rebounds per game and 41st in the country in total rebounds per contest. She finished ninth in the SSAC with an average 8.44 total rebounds per game. Posting career highs in offensive, defensive and total rebounds in a season, Brewer led her squad in all three categories. Additionally, she moved into sixth place on Loyola’s all-time scoring list, entering this season with 1,271 career points. Brewer is a three-time SSAC All-Conference honoree. At the conclusion of last season, she also earned SSAC All-Academic honors, the NAIA Champions of Character award, and Third Team All-Louisiana honors.

Brewer is surrounded by a strong cast of returning talent that will play an integral role in the success of this season. Junior Janeicia Neely was named to the SSAC All-Division Team at the 2012-13 season’s end due in part to her 11.3 points and 4 assists per game. Neely joined Brewer on the conference’s All-Academic Team. Sophomore Shayne Charles was named to the SSAC All-Freshman Team. Junior Rebekah Greer started 25 games for Loyola and led the team in three pointers. Greer and junior Callie McNally were also named to the All-Academic Team.

Five freshman along with junior University of Louisiana-Lafayette transfer Megan Whittaker will round out a roster filled with fresh faces and new offensive and defensive threats for the Wolf Pack.

Loyola will open regular season play on Saturday, Nov. 2 when they host Lyon College in The Den with tip-off set for 2 p.m. The Pack will compete in 17 local games this season, 14 of them scheduled in The Den. The SSAC Tournament will take place on March 5, 2014 in Montgomery, Ala.
