Thu, 11/08/2012

Miami, Fla- The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team will travel to Miami this weekend to kick off their season. The Wolf Pack will face Johnson and Wales on Friday with tip off  at 7 p.m. and Saturday against St. Thomas with a tip off at 2 p.m.

Despite losing two key players, Amy Sprout and Keiva Council, head coach Kellie Kennedy’s team returns starters Jasmine Brewer, Megen Berner, and Janeicia Neely. Brewer, a NAIA All-American honorable mention and SSAC All-Conference honoree, led the ‘Pack in rebounds as well as double-doubles. She also scored her career high 26 points against the University of Mobile. Brewer was voted All-Louisiana 3rd team, and named the 2011-2012 National All Jesuit Women’s basketball team.

Senior forward Megen Berner will continue her strong defense and an impressive career shooting percentage of 60.2.  She scored a career high of 16 points against Belhaven last season.

Sophomore returners, Janeicia Neely, Callie McNally, Rebekah Greer, and Alexis Ambeau will continue to be a vital part of this team’s success. Neely will be counted on to provide leadership in the backcourt.  Senior Adriene Easley will continue to add depth to round out the returning guards.

In addition to the veterans, the ‘Pack adds incoming freshman 5-7 guard Tyler Thompson (Bossier, La.), 5-9 guard Cassidy Eymard (Belle Chasse, La.), 5-10 forward Shayne Charles(New Iberia, La.), 5-9 shooting guard Briana Oglesby(Baton Rouge, La.), and 5-4 point guard Katie Youngblood(Long Beach, Miss.).

Earlier this month, the Loyola women’s basketball team received 37 votes in the NAIA’s preseason poll. The ‘Pack is just outside the Top 25 with the 26th most votes of any team mentioned in the poll. The Southern States Athletic Conference released their Coaches Preseason Poll earlier this week.  The ‘Pack is picked to finish second in the SSAC West Division.

Loyola will return home next week to play Emmanuel College on November 16th at 5:30 p.m. and Brewton-Parker on November 17th at 3:00 p.m. in The Den.
