(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team has won six of their last seven games following a road victory over #23 University of Mobile and will return home to host William Carey University as part of the 2014 Hall of Fame doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. in The Den.
The Wolf Pack (12-7, 6-3 SSAC) earned their fourth victory over a ranked opponent this season Thursday evening as they handily defeated Mobile 64-45. Senior Jasmine Brewer notched her sixth double-double of the season, turning in 17 points and 12 rebounds. She ranks number two in Division I in field goal percentage (56.2). She has posted points in double digits in all but two contests this season and collected rebounds in double figures in three of the Pack’s last four matchups. Brewer paces her squad in rebounds per game (8.26) and steals per game (1.68).
Junior Janeicia Neely commands the scoring effort for Loyola, averaging 14.32 points a night. Additionally, the guard leads her squad in assists per game (3.95). She turned in a game-high 21 points and three assists versus the Rams. Junior Megan Whittaker joined Brewer and Neely in double figures, contributing 10 points to the win. Freshman Meghan Temple secured seven rebounds and posted one block. She has 15 stuffs on the season.
The Crusaders (4-8, 3-6 SSAC) narrowly escaped Spring Hill, defeating the Badgers 49-46 on Thursday. Junior Tiffany Sims sealed the victory for William Carey, knocking down two free throws with less than a minute to play. She helped her team to the three-point win, turning in 12 points, three rebounds and two assists. In addition, she steadies her squad in steals (1.80) and blocks (0.50) per game. Senior Vechatita Bonner is averaging team-highs in multiple categories, including 9.18 points and 5.73 rebounds per contest.
Loyola has defeated six of their last seven opponents, two of the victories coming against ranked squads. With a win over William Carey, the Wolf Pack will knot the all-time record versus the Crusaders at 18.
The men’s and women’s games mark Hall of Fame Day as Joelle Bordelon Graham (’05, Women’s Basketball), Kiely Schork (’08, Women’s Basketball), Ed Wahden (‘62 , Baseball) and the 1946 Men’s Basketball Team of the 2014 Hall of Fame induction class will be introduced at halftime of the men’s basketball game. The women’s game will begin at 2 p.m. with the men’s tip off scheduled for 4 p.m.
The Wolf Pack in collaboration with the Department of Residential Life will also host “Biever Night at The Den” as part of the doubleheader. The competition will pit the 10 hallways of Biever Hall against one another in a contest for the highest attendance at the men’s and women’s tilts. The hallway represented by the most people will win a party catered by Cane’s for their residents. Biever residents are permitted to bring guests who will count toward their hallway’s total attendance.
