(Montgomery, Ala.) The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team will take on the University of Mobile in a semifinal round of the SSAC Tournament this evening at 6 p.m.
The Wolf Pack (21-10) entered the tournament as the number one seed in the SSAC West. Loyola defeated Emmanuel College, 62-51 to advance to the semifinal game versus Mobile (21-8), the number three seed in the West division.
Junior Janeicia Neely turned in a dominant all-around performance against the Lions, tallying 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. She paces the Pack in assists, averaging 4.39 per game. Senior Jasmine Brewer contributed 12 points, eight boards, two assists and one steal. Brewer commands her squad in average points (13.65), rebounds (7.90) and steals (1.74) per contest. Freshman Meghan Temple bucketed eight points and pulled down seven rebounds. Additionally, she leads the Pack in blocks with 22 stuffs on the season.
The Rams upset Faulkner, the number two seed in the SSAC East, to advance to the next round of tournament play. Senior Deonica McCormick earned a team-best 18 points in the Rams’ victory over the Eagles. She steadies the Rams in average points (20.76), assists (3.24), steals (2.31) and blocks (0.79) per game. McCormick was named SSAC Player of the Year at the conference awards banquet on Wednesday. Junior Jakela Johnson notched a double double, recording 16 points and securing 10 rebounds. Johnson went four for eight from the field and eight for 10 from the line.
Loyola has gone 15-4 in their last 19 contests. During the regular season, the Wolf Pack defeated Mobile, 64-45 on Jan. 23 on the road and topped the Rams, 67-59 on Feb. 13 at home. With a victory tonight, Loyola will knot the all-time series versus Mobile, 21-21.
Securing the regular season SSAC West division title, Loyola earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament on March 19-22.
